Life Lessons & Stories ~ Life Changing Life Lessons

Dean & Shirley Fowler

A chainsaw…the old wood stove…deer meat for the winter…rabbit, pheasant, and grouse for dinner…singing “Springs of Living Water” in a quartet with his twin sister, her husband, and my mom…leading song service at church…the twinkle in his eye on Sunday mornings as he prepared for church…collecting pine cones as a family when he couldn’t log because of bad weather…stepping on my wedding dress as we walked down the aisle together on my wedding day…holding my son ~ his first grandchild ~ for the first time…Just a handful of memories that come to mind when I think of Dad.

I was blessed to have a great dad! Perfect? Oh, no! But great? Oh, yes!

I learned many things from Dad, but there are two life lessons I will never forget; they changed my life. He didn’t sit me down to teach me these two most important lessons of my life; he lived them in front of me and modeled them in such a way that the seeds of truth took hold in the deepest part of me.

“You are never too old to change.”

As wonderful as my dad was, he had a bad temper when he was crossed. I saw that display of temper on many occasions. There were times when I felt afraid of him, and not just the healthy fear of respect.

When I was 17, my dad was critically injured in a logging accident. A log rolled over him, and he nearly died. I will always remember the day he came home from the hospital. It was supper time, and we all took our places around the table. Daddy spoke. With tears in his eyes he said, “Before we pray, I have something to say to you. I haven’t been the husband and dad I should have been, and I’m sorry. I told God in the hospital that if He would spare my life I would let Him change me. With His help, I will do my best to be a better dad and a better husband.”

Forty-five years later, tears still come to my eyes as I think back on that evening. And I watched! I watched him change. I saw him let God reshape and remold him into the most gentle and kind person you could ever hope to meet. Others who didn’t know him before his accident couldn’t conceive that Dean would ever lose his temper over anything.

And I learned a necessary life lesson… You are never too old to let God change you!

“You are never too old to learn new things.”

After his accident in the woods, Dad couldn’t go back to logging. The State of Oregon put him through a rehabilitation program — they sent him to school to learn accounting! He was nearly 40 at that time. By then, I was in college, too. He lived alone in Salem, Oregon while he attended school there. Mom continued to work and live in Lincoln City with my siblings. They couldn’t afford to move everyone to Salem. He finished his program with very high marks and was then hired as an auditor for the State.

And I learned another very important life lesson… You are never too old to learn something new.

Did I apply those life lessons? I most certainly did!

I reached a time of failure in my life. I came face to face with truths about myself that nearly destroyed me, my marriage, and my family. I had a choice… I remembered how God changed my dad, and I chose to let Him change me, too. It wasn’t easy. However, as I desperately began to seek Him day after day, little by little the changes came. Am I perfect now? Most assuredly not! Nevertheless, He has made big changes in my walk with Him and my understanding of Him and His love for me. I am forgiven and continuing to seek Him day after day. He is still changing me — making me more like Him! That process will continue until the day He calls me Home!

After my husband died in 1997, my whole life changed course. I moved to another state, and God provided me with an office job at the university where my husband and I had met twenty-nine years earlier. Those changes would have been enough, but then came the day when my new boss said to me, “If you take the classes to learn how to teach ESL, it will help your job. We teach those classes here, and if you’ll take them, we’ll pay for them.”

It seemed like an easy thing to do and a great opportunity. However, I found myself back in school at the age of 50. While working full time, I not only took the TESL classes, but also decided to finish my Bachelor of Arts in Music which I had begun more than thirty years before. Remembering Dad, I pushed ahead to complete the academic courses that God placed before me. Then came graduation day when I heard my boss call my name. “Margaret Jane Fowler Downing…Bachelor of Arts in Music and Standard Certificate to Teach English as a Second Language.”

I sat back on my laurels and thought, “At last I’m finished with all the big changes.” Boy was I wrong! God had planned another significant change in my life — He moved me to Beijing, China to teach English as a Second Language! Talk about change! But that’s another story…

By now I’ve begun to realize that life is full of change — both major and minor. I have resigned myself to the simple fact that God isn’t finished with me yet! It’s a good thing my dad learned those lessons where I could see them happening.

Dad was right; you’re never too old to change and never too old to learn something new. Thanks, Dad, I owe you!

So true JanieD. We are never too old to learn. Here I am after 42 yrs of aviation wondering what I am to be doing……God where are the blue prints you have been saving for me for just this very time? I can’t find them on the shelf, maybe they are stored in a drawer somewhere…..I’ll find them eventually. In the mean time, I am encouraged by your writings and your example. You are truely a witness of Gods’ provision. Thanks Dean for teaching us all these lessons of life.

Janie you have always had the ability to look at a situation and find the deep meaning hidden in there and bring it out for everyone to understand. Thank you for sharing about your dad and reminding me of what you have been through these last 14 years. Rich would be so proud of you but not surprised at all. Although you do make me feel tired just thinking about all you do each day and you are older than me!
